Healthy & Hydrated + Tips to Drink More Water


We've all heard how important it is to drink water. I'm one of those people who knew the facts and still wasn't drinking enough of it. I'd carry around a mini gallon, but it would still be full at the end of the day. I needed to motivate myself and find ways to actually drink the water instead of carrying my
bottle around like a purse. I didn't realize how much water actually made a difference until I finally got myself to drink as much as my body needed. Not only did I feel better, but I looked healthier as well. Here are some of the benefits of drinking water and what happens inside the body as well as outside.

Benefits:
  • eliminates waste and flushes out toxins (good for your kidneys)
  • lubricates stiff joints
  • can relieve headaches
  • more energy
  • aids in digestion
  • can aid in weight loss
  • carries oxygen and nutrients to your cells
  • increases the production of new blood cells
  • regulates body temperature
  • helps to balance the lymph system
  • helps with absorbing nutrients
Appearance:
  • makes you look younger and healthier
  • clearer brighter eyes
  • less wrinkles
  • radiant skin
  • smoother, firmer skin
  • can lighten dark shadows under the eyes
  • helps clear acne


Signs of dehydration:
  • Dryness: Dry skin (may be be itchy), eyes, lips, mouth  
  • Bad breath (halitosis):Water produces saliva which combats the overgrowth of oral bacteria
  • Headaches
  • Constipation
  • Feeling light headed/ dizziness
  • Fatigued/weakness
  • Thirsty: when you realize you're thirsty, you're already dehydrated
  • Dark urine: should be a light yellow to clear (medicine and vitamins can change the color) 
  • Decrease in urinating, or not urinating (extreme cases)
  • Impaired memory/ confusion/ irritability 


Tips to Drinking more water:

1. Refillable water bottle: Carry a refillable water bottle with you, simple enough right?! I use to carry one around and still not use it. Then I got a pretty one that I actually liked and suddenly I started using it more. I know it sounds silly but you're more likely to use it if like the way it looks/feels, my favorite bottle is my pink and white blender bottle. It has rubber around the outside which makes it easy to grip, I also like that it has measurements on the outside so I know how much water I'm drinking.

2. Drink from a straw: I've noticed that I drink way more water when I have a straw, specifically when it's a water bottle that comes with one of those thick straws.

3. Fruit infused water: Another great way to spruce up your water is by adding some delicious ingredients into it! Not only will you be hydrating your body, but you're also taking in those nutrients. There are tons of recipes for creating your own fruit infused water including detox recipes. You don't have to stick with fruits though, you can mix it up with herbs and spices like cinnamon. There are lots of benefits to drinking your water by simply flavoring it with ingredients that can boost your health. One of my favorite fruit infused water mixtures consist of strawberries, mint, and lime. I like to experiment by trying different ingredients together to see what I come up with. Aside from adding these into your water, eating fruits and veggies with high water content will also help to hydrate and nourish your body.

4. Coconut water: Coconut water is super hydrating and it's delicious. Just make sure that you're not buying one that has added sugar. I actually like to add some coconut water to water, you can even add a splash of pineapple or lime juice. Yum!

5. Set a goal: If you're not use to drinking water, start off small and then add more water into your daily intake as you get use to it. That way you don't try to drink all your water at night trying to meet your daily goal.

6. Reminders: There are different apps that you can download to help you keep track of how much water you're drinking and to remind you to hydrate yourself.
